Voice artists play a critical role in the production of cartoons and often command payments that are equal to or greater than cartoonists. Study this web site that describes the voices used to produce the Simpson's cartoon. These voice artists use many of the same tricks used by traditional oral story tellers to pull in and entertain their audiences.
Students will present a well-crafted entertaining oral story to the class for critique:
1. Choose a story to present from the internet or other sources that: is in the public domain, displays interesting characters, has dramatic appeal, creates pleasing sounds and rhythms, and is appropriate for school. Include as an introduction the origins of the tale.
2. Illustrate your story using different character voices, word speed and variable volume.
3. Use descriptive vocabulary that stimulates the listeners’ senses.
4. Include throwaway lines or asides as they work well for comic relief.
5. Incorporate audience participation techniques as they are a great way to reinforce your story elements and maintain the attention of your audience.
Bonus credit will be provided to story tellers who present in costume or use non-electronic props to enhance their performance.
