New Directions
We have been telling stories to each other since the dawn of time. The cave paintings of Lascaux, France are evidence of early stories told by tribes to understand their world. Sometimes the art world gives us the start of some very interesting stories, but these works also leave us with a lot of questions, like what happens next? Who made this art? What was their intent? Sometimes the artist has made their ideas obvious, but more often there are secrets lost to time or not understood unless we submerge ourselves in the culture of the people and times of that artist.
Books can sometimes have this effect, too. Authors may introduce characters who are interesting, but may not play a dominant role in the first story. Sometimes authors go back and continue the plot creating a series of books surrounding one character or that character's lineage. Think of say "The Hobbit" by JRR Tolkien. "The Hobbit" was the first book that introduced the character of Bilbo and the story of the ring, but this was only the beginning and Tolkien never planned to stick with Bilbo for long. He continued the story through a trilogy of books. Sometimes authors don't get to go back and continue the story. They may leave us hanging. What happened to that character. At the end of "Gone With the Wind" we don't really know if Scarlett and Rhett will ever get together. It seems they won't, but who knows.
Sometimes too, one or two tiny plot twists cause our favorite characters to be doomed. The goal of this project is for you to explore a work of art that already exists and ask the Question.....What happens next? or What if? Use a book you've read or a work of art you've admired. You CANNOT USE MOVIES AS A WORK OF ART. YOU NEED TO LOOK AT SOME OF THE LINKS PROVIDED TO DEVELOP YOUR IDEA.
Examples: What if Jack never met Jill? What if the Beast had attacked Belle instead of falling in love with her? What happens next in the painting "Starry Night"? is that a storm, is that why the sky looks like that? What is going to happen next in the "Mona Lisa"? Is she smiling because there is a secret she's hiding? Who is she?
Post a page that includes 3 images that have inspired you and also write a proposal for your idea. Explain the story you'd like to continue. What is the story of the book or art you're going to base the video on? How will you make this experimental? How will you twist the meaning or concept of the story? How will you be inspired by the original work of art?
